National Camps for the Gifted and Talented

Davidson Institute for Talent Development is seeking profoundly gifted students, ages 12 through 15, who are interested in attending the 2008 THINK Summer Institute, a three-week residential summer program on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno where students can earn up to seven college credits. Financial assistance is available based on need.  To qualify, students must be 12 to 15 years old during THINK, and must meet or exceed designated SAT (www.collegeboard.com) or ACT (www.actstudent.org) scores.

MathCamp  Summer Program for Mathematically Talented High-School Students from around the World.  The camp will be held from July 2 to August 6 at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington.

The HCPS-USF Honors College 8 week “High School Achievers research Program” will provide eight gifted rising seniors a 25 hour per week non-residential mentored research opportunity in the context of research methods, lab skills, ethics and college preparatory training.  Students will earn 7 college credits and receive a stipend.

Brevard Community College
Calculus, Probability and Statistics on the Frontline:  A Journey from Rate of Change, Rolling Dice, and Census to Profound Impacts on Our World
Calculus, Probability and Statistics on the Frontline demonstrates the advanced mathematics underlying technology used to combat problems as diverse as pollutants, crime, and terrorism.   Highlights include interacting with mathematicians developing solutions for Homeland Security and a trip down the Indian River to college water samples for both chemical and mathematical analysis.  Twenty gifted and high achieving students in grades 8-12 will participate in a day program on the Brevard Community College Melbourne campus July 7-31.  Dual enrollment provides eight college credit hours in Honors Calculus and Honors Statistics.  There is no cost to students.

South Florida Community College
Giants, Goblins, and Gingerbread
Giants, Goblins, and Gingerbread is a college-credit day program for gifted and high-achieving students that will focus on an interactive study of 19th Century Germanic literature through dramatic art.  The program is designed to accommodate twenty-five gifted and talented students entering grades 9-12 who have an interest in learning more about classic children’s literature and the art form of musical theatre.  This will be a four week course from June 2-27, 2008.  Participating students will have an opportunity to earn three hours of transferable college credit in an enriching, creative environment from a panel of experienced, qualified faculty.  Contact PersonLindsay Byron Lynch, 863-784-7413

Lake City Community College
Advanced Anatomy and Physiology
Lake City Community College’s Advanced Anatomy and Physiology Program will benefit 25 rising tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders from Baker, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist and Union Counties.   This day program will take place July 7th to July 31st, 2008.  Participants will take BSC and BSCL 2085 (Anatomy and Physiology I, with lab), earning four Dual Enrollment college credits with no charge for books or tuition,  Students will learn from advanced study using resources unavailable in local secondary schools, including a human cadaver, ultrasound technology, and patient simulators.  They will debate the ethics of science and explore careers in the biological sciences.  Contact Person: Brian Dopson   386-754-4209

Manatee Community College
Revealing the Truth: Multidisciplinary Explorations into Crime Scene Investigations
This is a non-credit day program for 24 qualified gifted and high-achieving students, grades 10-12, in Manatee and Sarasota counties (urban and rural).  It will run for four weeks, July 7-31. four days a week, five hours a day.  Activities infuse the social and natural sciences, information technology, mathematics and 21st century workplace skills with advanced critical thinking required by crime-scene investigations.  Participants observe law-enforcement practice, learn about DNA laboratory activities and present their investigative conclusions to a prosecuting attorney.  No fee required.

North Florida Community College
Water, Awareness, Testing, Evaluation, and Restoration (WATER)
This is a free, three-week day program using the relevant topic of water quality to provide postsecondary level scientific experiences to challenge 40 gifted/high-achieving 8-12 graders. The goals include providing complex problem-solving opportunities, teaching the scientific method, encouraging leadership and developing the students’ awareness of water quality issues in their community.  Using the unique water resources of the area, students will develop advanced skills in the sciences to assess aquifer quality and environmental impact.  Select secondary level science teachers will be encouraged to participate and credit in escrow will be offered.
